We are very happy to learn that through a competitive process, Jeyani has been selected to receive Summer Training And Research (STAR) funding for Summer 2017. Jeyani will study how cardiac tissues function in various stress imposed by space travel during the summer. Congratulations Jeyani!
Oludunsin wins the best presentation award on Senior Design Day 2017
Our very own Oludunsin was selected for the best presentation award on Senior Design Day. Oludunsin and his team designed a better lacrosse stick to help catch the ball with higher efficiency. The combination of good design and excellent presentation impressed the audience and judges alike. Very proud of you, Oludunsin!
Welcome Matt C!
We are excited to have Matthew Chea, an electric and computer engineering (ECE) major and rising junior, on board. Matt will be starting his research on computational super-resolution algorithm this summer. Welcome to MAFIA, Matt!
Welcome Tanner!
We are excited to welcome Tanner Walker, a MechE major and a rising junior, to join the MAFIA family. Tanner will take over the extremely challenging DNA origami project starting this summer. We are super psyched to work with you and have fun in the lab, Tanner!
Jenny and Brian Present at DREAMS 2017
Jenny and Brian presented their research at Day of undergraduate Research in Engineering, the Arts & humanities, Medicine, and the Sciences (DREAMS), where undergraduate students from all departments of JHU present their work. The goal of the event is to celebrate the research and other creative endeavors of JHU’s undergraduate students.
Other MAFIA members were there to show our support. Both Jenny and Brian got many interests for their research.
Good job, B & J!
Spring Starts with a Good Talk and a Good Dinner
Prof. Arpita Upadhyaya visited and gave a wonderful department seminar about actin mechanics during T cell activation. The talk was followed by a equally wonderful dinner with lots of follow-up questions. We had a good Thursday.
Want to learn some cell mechanics?
Commercial time: go to http://qcbnet.ucsf.edu/ and register for the Cells as Dynamical Systems workshop. Yun will be giving a talk.
Photo-Op
Responding to the popular demand, Brian, Jeyani and Yun participated in a photo-op at SOM.
It turns out playing models who pretend to do experiments is harder than doing the experiments ourselves. It’s a first for everybody. What an experience!
Brian thinks he will stick to modeling tissue formation and put on hold his professional career of modeling FOR tissue formation for the time being.

Yun, Seungman, Deb, Wei-Hung, and Nick, took a day trip to Bethesda for a collaboration meeting and an overdue happy hour. It was great to get back to Rock Bottom and catch up with old friends. We had a great time!
Welcome Nick
We welcome Nicholas Yam, a MSE student from Biomedical Engineering, joining the lab of MAFIA. Nick will be characterizing tissue microenvironment by multi-scale imaging approaches. Very excited to have you on board, Nick!
